If you hire engineers in India, the college on the resume still tells you something — just not what it told you a decade ago. The old top-tier list has expanded, the placement numbers have stopped being reliable signal, and the strongest technical hires in your last cohort probably came from at least two colleges you didn't recruit at three years ago.
This is a working list of the top 12 Computer Science Engineering colleges in India, updated for 2026. It is written for technical recruiters, campus hiring leads, and engineering managers who need to decide where to invest their limited campus budget — and how much weight to put on the college brand once resumes start landing.
A caveat before the list: the ranking below draws from NIRF 2024 rankings, QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, and publicly reported placement data. Rankings shift year to year. The order matters less than the tier — and the tier matters less than what you do with the candidates once they apply.
Why the "top CSE colleges" list matters less than it used to
Three things changed since this list was first published.
First, resume signal from the top colleges has degraded. AI-generated project descriptions, ChatGPT-polished cover letters, and inflated internship claims are now standard across every tier. A CSE degree from IIT Bombay is still a strong prior, but it is a prior, not proof.
Second, the talent pool has widened. Tier-2 NITs, IIITs, and a handful of private universities now regularly produce candidates who out-code IIT graduates on structured assessments. If your pipeline only goes to five colleges, you are leaving strong hires on the table — and paying premium salaries for the ones you do land.
Third, the placement package headlines have become noise. A "1.5 crore offer" almost always includes a US-based role, sign-on bonus, and stock — not a domestic package. Optimizing your campus strategy around headline packages will misallocate your budget.
The list below is useful for one thing: it tells you which colleges are worth the cost of a campus visit, a hiring challenge, or a targeted assessment campaign. It does not tell you which candidates to hire. That decision belongs to your rubric.

IIT Bombay remains the default first choice for most companies hiring CSE graduates in India. IIT Madras has held the top spot in NIRF's engineering category for nine consecutive years.
The CSE department produces consistent ACM ICPC finalists and Google Summer of Code participants. Publicly reported placement summaries from the 2023–24 season — as covered in mainstream Indian business press — put domestic CSE offers broadly in the 30–50 LPA range, with international offers from firms such as Google, Microsoft, and Jane Street pushing headline numbers higher. Treat these as directional rather than official; IIT Bombay does not publish candidate-level offer data.
For recruiters: expect stiff competition from tier-1 product companies and quant firms. If you are not offering top-of-market compensation, IIT-B is expensive brand-building, not efficient hiring.

2. IIIT Hyderabad
IIIT Hyderabad remains the strongest research-oriented CSE program outside the IIT system. The intake is deliberately small, the coding culture is deep, and the faculty-to-student ratio is unusually favorable for undergraduate research.
Students here consistently place well at ACM ICPC regionals and international programming contests. What makes IIIT-H worth a separate line item in your campus plan: the concentration of students who actually build things is higher than at most IITs. 3. IIT Kanpur
IIT Kanpur's CSE department has an unusual position in the ecosystem: it produces a disproportionate share of the researchers who go on to teach CS in US universities. Anecdotally, IIT Kanpur alumni are a visible presence on CS faculty rosters at US universities — this is a pattern we observe rather than a ranked statistic, so weight it accordingly.
Placement outcomes are strong but slightly narrower in company mix than IIT Bombay or Delhi. If you are hiring for systems, ML research, or roles where deep CS fundamentals matter more than framework fluency, IIT-K graduates tend to outperform their peers.

4. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore
IISc is not a comparable school to the others on this list — it is primarily a research institution, and its CSE-adjacent programs (CSA, DSA, ECE) are graduate-heavy. It ranked in the 251–300 band on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2024 for Computer Science, and rose to 96th on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025 for Computer Science — the leading Indian institution in that subject ranking.
For recruiters, IISc is a specialist channel: strong for research scientists, ML PhDs, and roles where a master's or doctorate is a genuine requirement rather than a filter. It is a poor fit for high-volume undergraduate hiring.

5. IIT Madras
IIT Madras deserves its own line rather than being folded into a general IIT bucket. Its CSE program is competitive with IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur, and the institute has built one of India's strongest applied-research ecosystems — particularly around AI, robotics, and systems.
Shaastra, the annual tech festival, and the RBCDSAI research center produce a steady flow of students with real project portfolios rather than course-completion credentials. IIT Madras has also launched an online BSc in programming and data science that is producing a new kind of candidate at scale — worth watching if your pipeline is hitting a wall.

6. IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur is the largest IIT campus and has an alumni base that reads like a who's who of technology (Sundar Pichai is the headline name, but the pattern is broader). The placement mix is broader than IIT-B — you will see more finance, more consulting, and more traditional enterprise employers here. Useful if you are recruiting for a role that isn't pure product engineering.

7. BITS Pilani
BITS Pilani is the strongest non-government engineering school in India, and its CSE program regularly produces founders. BITS alumni are frequently cited among the founders of Indian technology companies, including several unicorns, though founder-count figures vary by source. If you are recruiting for early-stage builders, BITS graduates tend to be more entrepreneurial and less credential-anxious than their IIT counterparts.
The trade-off: less exposure to formal CS research. Strong builders, sometimes weaker theoretical fundamentals. Match the college to the role.

8. NIT Trichy
NIT Trichy is the highest-ranked NIT on NIRF 2024's engineering list (rank 9), and its CSE department consistently places students at companies that also recruit from the older IITs. The programming clubs are active and the alumni network is unusually engaged for a public institution.
The compensation ceiling is lower than the top IITs, but the price-per-hire math is better. For companies with structured graduate programs and an interest in building rather than poaching, NIT Trichy should be in the top three campuses on your list, not the eighth.

9. NIT Warangal
NIT Warangal has an active competitive-programming culture and a strong peer group. It ranks in India's top 20 for engineering on most lists. Amazon, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs recruit here regularly, and the CSE placement numbers have been steady even in slower hiring years.
NIT Warangal has particular strength in systems and databases research, and its coding club, the Computer Science Guild (CSG), runs one of the more active competitive-programming communities among the NITs. For most practical hiring purposes it is comparable in tier to NIT Trichy — pair the two in a campus plan and pick between them on logistics and travel cost.

10. Delhi Technological University (DTU)
DTU sits in an interesting position: not an IIT, not an NIT, but consistently placing in the top 15 engineering schools in India. Its CSE and IT departments have expanded seat count over the past decade, and the placement mix now includes serious representation from product companies and finance firms.
Compensation for top DTU CSE graduates has moved closer to IIT ranges over the past three years. If your Delhi-region campus strategy skips DTU, you are missing volume.

11. Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT)
NSUT — formerly NSIT, and before that Delhi Institute of Technology — sits in the same tier as DTU for practical hiring purposes. Its CSE department consistently produces candidates who compete with IIT graduates on programming contests and technical interviews, and the placement outcomes have been strong for the past several years.
Delhi-region recruiters should be running NSUT and DTU as a paired campaign, not treating either as a fallback.

12. IIT (BHU) Varanasi
IIT (BHU) Varanasi — formerly the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), with engineering roots dating to 1919 as Banaras Engineering College, converted to IIT status in 2012 — has a longer engineering history than most of the newer IITs. Its CSE department is competitive with the newer IITs and often better-connected to industry through its BHU alumni network.
Placement outcomes are solid but more variable year to year than the older IITs. Worth a campus slot if you are building volume from the north Indian talent pool.
What this list won't tell you
Every college above will send you good candidates and bad ones. The differentiator is not the college — it is your evaluation process.
A few specific traps to avoid:
- Headline placement packages are not signal. A 1.5 crore offer from Google Redmond is a US role with sign-on and stock. It tells you almost nothing about the average candidate quality at that school.
- Alumni fame is not causal. Sundar Pichai went to IIT Kharagpur. This does not mean IIT Kharagpur produces Sundar Pichais at a higher rate than IIT Bombay does. Most alumni-name-dropping in college marketing is survivorship bias.
- NIRF and QS rankings measure different things. NIRF weights research output, placement, and diversity. QS weights academic reputation and citations. A school can be top-5 on one and top-30 on the other. Pick the ranking that matches what you are hiring for.
- Top-3 colleges are usually oversubscribed. If you are a mid-size company competing with FAANG for IIT Bombay CSE, the ROI on that campus visit is bad. Go where you can win.
How to actually decide where to recruit

One: what's the role? Research-heavy roles want IISc, IIIT-H, IIT-K, IIT-M. Product-engineering roles work across the top 12. High-volume campus intake for services or platform companies should focus on NITs and the tier-2 IITs where you are not competing head-on with product-company compensation.
Two: what's your compensation ceiling? If you cannot pay 30 LPA+ for fresh CSE graduates, the top three colleges are not your best ROI. Move down the list to schools where your offer is competitive rather than laughable.
Three: how good is your evaluation process? This is the one that most hiring teams get wrong. If your assessment can distinguish a strong builder from a strong test-taker, the college matters less. If it cannot, you will keep over-indexing on brand and under-indexing on skill.

What about online CSE programs like IIT Madras BSc?
Worth watching. The IIT Madras online BSc in programming and data science is producing candidates at a scale materially larger than the residential program, and the top decile of graduates has been strong in structured evaluations. Most recruiters have not yet built a pipeline here. That will change over the next two hiring cycles.
