Workable ATS integration with HackerEarth: a guide to technical screening inside your ATS
Last updated: 2025 · 8 min read
ATS integration — the process of connecting your applicant tracking system to other hiring tools through APIs so candidate data, assessments, and communications flow between platforms without manual handoffs — is how modern recruiting teams reduce screening time and keep hiring decisions inside a single workflow. According to SHRM, integrated recruiting technology is now a baseline expectation for talent acquisition teams operating at scale, not a differentiator. The Workable ATS integration with HackerEarth Assessments is one such connection: it lets recruiters trigger technical assessments, review candidate reports, and move engineers through the pipeline directly from Workable, without switching platforms.
This guide explains what the Workable ATS integration does, when it fits, its trade-offs, and how to set it up step by step. It also answers the most common questions recruiters ask about Workable and ATS integrations more broadly.
A point of view up front: the most valuable part of an assessment integration is not the ability to send tests from inside your ATS — most integrations do that. It's the ability to trigger tests automatically based on pipeline stage, so recruiters stop being the bottleneck between "applied" and "screened." Teams that treat the integration as a manual-invite shortcut leave most of the value on the table. For related reading, see our guide to reducing time-to-hire in technical recruiting and how a skills-based hiring approach changes what you screen for.

What ATS integration means
ATS integration refers to connecting your applicant tracking system with third-party tools — assessment platforms, job boards, background check services, video interview tools, HRIS systems — so data and actions sync automatically between them. Instead of exporting candidate lists, emailing test invitations manually, or logging into multiple dashboards, integrated tools pass information back and forth through an API.
For technical recruiters, the practical outcome of a well-built ATS integration is fewer tabs, less duplicate data entry, and a single source of truth for candidate status. Gartner's research on recruiting technology notes that fragmented candidate data across disconnected point tools is a leading cause of drop-off and rework in technical hiring pipelines.
Is Workable an ATS system?
Yes. Workable is an applicant tracking system (ATS) and hiring platform used by recruiters and hiring managers to source candidates, post jobs to job boards, manage the pipeline, and collaborate on hiring decisions. It also includes sourcing, AI-assisted screening, and integrations with third-party tools like HackerEarth for technical assessments. You can learn more on the Workable website.
Is Workable a legitimate job board?
Workable is not primarily a job board — it is an ATS that distributes job postings to multiple job boards (including Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and free niche boards) from a single interface. Jobs posted in Workable can be syndicated across dozens of boards, and applications flow back into the Workable ATS. So while Workable is a legitimate hiring platform, candidates typically encounter Workable-hosted job listings through partner boards rather than as a standalone job search destination.
How much does Workable ATS cost?
Workable uses tiered pricing that scales with active jobs, seats, and features. Workable publishes three main plans (Starter, Standard, and Premier), with add-ons such as AI sourcing, video interviews, and assessment integrations available at additional cost. Because Workable adjusts pricing periodically and specific dollar figures reported by third parties may be stale, confirm current tier pricing directly on the Workable pricing page before budgeting rather than relying on figures published elsewhere.
Workable API and Workable AI: how they relate to this integration
Two terms often come up alongside Workable ATS integrations:
- Workable API — Workable exposes a REST API that developers can use to build custom integrations if the packaged connector does not meet a specific need. The HackerEarth integration described in this guide uses the packaged connector, not a raw API build, so no engineering work is required on your side.
- Workable AI — Workable's AI features (AI sourcing, AI-assisted screening, and candidate recommendations) operate on the candidate data inside your Workable pipeline. Technical assessment scores from HackerEarth flow back onto the candidate record, so those signals are available alongside Workable's AI-generated shortlists, not in place of them.
If you need workflows beyond what the packaged connector supports (for example, syncing assessment data into a data warehouse or custom analytics platform), the Workable API is the path — but that is a separate build from the integration this guide covers.
What the Workable ATS integration with HackerEarth does
The Workable ATS integration with HackerEarth connects Workable's pipeline stages to HackerEarth Assessments. Here is what changes for the recruiter: instead of exporting shortlists, sending assessment invitations manually, and reconciling scores in a spreadsheet, you attach a HackerEarth test to a pipeline stage in Workable, invite candidates in one click, and view score reports on the candidate's Workable timeline.
Concretely, the integration lets you:
- Post a job in Workable and attach a HackerEarth technical assessment to any pipeline stage (Phone Screen, Assessment, or Interview).
- Trigger assessment invitations to candidates from within Workable.
- Receive score reports back on the candidate's Workable profile without logging into HackerEarth.

Benefits of the integration
The integration is useful primarily for teams that already use Workable and need technical screening at scale. The load-bearing argument for using it — rather than sending tests manually or using a lighter-weight code test — is that stage-based automatic triggering removes recruiter judgment from the "who gets tested" decision, which is where inconsistent screening usually creeps in. Here is what that enables in practice.
Skill-based assessments built into the pipeline
You can attach HackerEarth technical assessments to specific pipeline stages so screening is triggered automatically as candidates progress. Per the HackerEarth product catalog, HackerEarth Assessments support a wide range of programming languages and a broad evaluation library across engineering, data, DevOps, and non-technical roles, letting you match test content to the specific role. Larger customers can also request custom content for roles not covered in the standard library.
A shorter tech-hiring workflow
HackerEarth Assessments pre-screen candidates from your applicant pool and rank them using performance reports, so recruiters spend less time reviewing unqualified applicants. Unlike code-only test platforms, HackerEarth's reports separate signal by skill area (data structures, systems, language proficiency, role-specific skills), so a "70%" score is not a black box — recruiters can see which competencies drove it. Shortlist recommendations surface in Workable, and follow-up interviews can be scheduled from the same interface.
Deeper performance signals per candidate
Beyond a pass/fail score, HackerEarth reports capture time-to-complete, per-skill performance, plagiarism/proctoring flags, and code quality metrics — signals that help you compare candidates on more than a single number. Reports are viewable within Workable or in the HackerEarth Assessments platform, and the FaceCode live coding interview report (when used) is stored alongside the assessment record in HackerEarth for full-context review.
Shared visibility for the hiring team
Score reports live on the candidate's Workable timeline, so hiring managers and interviewers can review results without a separate HackerEarth login. This keeps feedback and decisions attached to the candidate record — which matters more than any individual score, because it prevents the "which spreadsheet has the latest results?" problem that consolidated reporting is meant to solve.
When the integration may not be the right fit
The integration is designed for teams that need standardized technical screening inside a Workable pipeline. It may be less useful if:
- Your open roles are primarily non-technical and you already have a screening tool you're happy with — though note that HackerEarth Assessments do cover non-technical roles including sales, customer support, and finance, and larger customers can commission custom content for any job role.
- You screen fewer than a handful of technical candidates per year — the setup effort may outweigh the savings.
- Your team relies on a different ATS as the system of record. In that case, HackerEarth integrates with several other applicant tracking systems; contact your HackerEarth account team for the current integration list.
- You need highly customized workflows that go beyond stage-based test triggers — you may need direct API access rather than the packaged integration.
Like any integration, the value depends on volume, role type, and how consistently your team uses both platforms.

Frequently asked questions
What does ATS integration mean? ATS integration is the connection of your applicant tracking system with third-party hiring tools — assessment platforms, job boards, video interview tools, HRIS systems — through APIs, so candidate data and actions sync automatically between platforms. The less obvious part is what breaks when you don't have it: candidates sit in "assessment" stage for days because a recruiter hasn't sent the test, or scores land in an inbox rather than on the candidate record, so hiring managers make decisions on partial information. Integration mainly removes those handoff gaps rather than adding new capability.
Is Workable an ATS system? Yes — and worth flagging: Workable is often compared to sourcing tools and job boards, but its core function is pipeline management. Teams evaluating Workable against LinkedIn Recruiter or Indeed are usually comparing tools that solve different problems in the same funnel.
Is Workable a legitimate job board? Workable is a legitimate hiring platform, but it functions as an ATS rather than a standalone job board. Jobs posted in Workable are distributed to partner job boards including Indeed, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor.
How much does Workable ATS cost? Workable offers tiered pricing across Starter, Standard, and Premier plans, with Premier priced on request. Because third-party pricing figures for Workable can go stale between updates, confirm current plans and dollar figures directly on the Workable pricing page.
Does the Workable integration with HackerEarth cost extra? The integration itself does not require a separate purchase from HackerEarth for HackerEarth Assessments customers, but there is a tension worth surfacing in contract negotiation: packaged integrations are sometimes bundled at higher plan tiers, and connector scope (which triggers, which report fields sync, whether FaceCode is exposed inside Workable) can be renegotiated as part of a renewal rather than treated as fixed. Ask your HackerEarth account team to itemize which integration capabilities are included at your current tier before assuming parity with the marketing page. Assessment plan details are on the HackerEarth Assessments page.
Can I use the integration for non-technical roles? Yes. HackerEarth Assessments cover engineering, data, and DevOps roles as well as non-technical roles such as sales, customer support, and finance, and larger customers can request custom content for other job families. The integration flow itself is role-agnostic.
